What is MTF?

Leverage for delivery, not just intraday

Margin Trading Facility (MTF) allows you to buy and hold shares in the delivery segment by paying only a portion of the total value. The remaining amount is funded by the broker against pledged holdings — so you can take larger conviction positions without blocking full capital.

Shares bought via MTF are pledged in your demat account until you repay the funded amount or sell the position.

Without MTF ₹1,00,000

Capital needed for ₹1L of shares

  • 100% upfront payment
  • Lower capital efficiency
With 4× MTF ₹25,000

Your margin for ₹1L of shares

  • 75% broker-funded
  • Hold delivery positions
How it works

MTF in four simple steps

1Pay margin

Place a delivery buy with MTF — pay 25%–50% based on leverage.

2Shares pledged

Purchased shares are pledged in demat as collateral for funding.

3Hold & track

Monitor position, margin and interest from your trading platform.

4Repay or sell

Repay funded amount or sell shares to close MTF and unpledge.

Eligible stocks may offer up to 4× leverage — meaning you pay roughly 25% margin and the broker funds the remaining 75%. Leverage varies by stock and broker policy.

Yes. Interest is typically charged on the funded (borrowed) amount for the days you hold the MTF position. Use the calculator above for an estimate.

You will receive margin shortfall alerts. You must add funds or reduce exposure within the stipulated time to avoid forced liquidation as per exchange and broker norms.

MTF involves leverage and interest cost. It suits investors who understand delivery holding, pledge mechanics and the risk of losses exceeding their margin if prices move adversely.
